Introduction
Ever wondered why you ask an AI model such as Chatgpt to help you write that school essay or brainstorm ideas for your next viral social media content only to receive a flood of generic and often useless information? Meanwhile, others seem to effortlessly generate high-quality content with AI, leaving you frustrated and wondering why it’s not working for you. Well, this might be because you haven't been let in on a not-so-secret technique called 'Prompt Engineering'.

What is Prompt Engineering?
Prompt Engineering is the process of providing AI with thoughtfully designed input prompts so as to fully maximise the generated response. It is a crucial skill for maximizing the effectiveness of AI models like GPT and other language-based systems. This simply means that typing out a one-sentence prompt will almost always not be enough to generate satisfying results from these models. The key to obtaining accurate, informative and relevant results from AI technologies lies in crafting precise and well-thought-out prompts. Whatever your task may be, mastering prompt engineering ensures AI tools deliver your desired output. Fortunately, in just a few easy steps you can learn and master the art of communicating with AI, allowing you to get exactly what you want from these technologies.
1) Clearly Define Your Task
Getting the most out of any AI model requires you to provide a clear and actionable task you want it to perform. Hence, you need to have a good understanding of what you want to achieve with the AI. When typing out your task, ensure to specify the action and desired outcome using clear and concise language. Another best practice, is to start your prompt with a clear action verb (e.g 'Suggest', 'Define', 'List',  'Generate' etc). For example, "Draft an email to the team regarding the upcoming project deadline"
2) Provide Context
The need to provide the right context when using AI for tasks cannot be stressed enough. Without enough contexts, the AI model might generate responses that are generic, vague, or unrelated to your objective. Context is crucial for effective AI prompting because it helps to give the model a better understanding of the background or specifics of your taskand ensures that its responses are tailored to be more accurate, relevant and useful. So when next you seek the assistance of any AI technology, do not hold back from providing the necessary background information that defines the scenario and requirement of your task. The more details you provide, the better the AI can tailor its response to meet your needs.
3) Make Use Of Examples
AI models can generate a wide range of responses based on the given input, but without clear guidance, the responses may not always align with what you want. Including examples can help, significantly, to guide the content accuracy of its response. By doing this, you can effectively narrow down the scope of possible answers, helping the AI deliver more precise results that match your expectations. Hence, instead of just asking Chatgpt to help you build a resume for your next job application, try also including a template you’d like it to follow in order to cut down on time spent on formatting.
4) Specify Format, Length and Tone
Specifying instructions on how responses should be structured and presented is also a good rule of thumb when working with AI technologies. These instructions may include the format (e.g. lists, essay, report), length (e.g. word or character count), tone (e.g. formal, conversational, technical, creative) or whatever you feel would be crucial for obtaining your desired result.
5) Leverage Role-play
Sometimes asking AI to act as a particular character (e.g. an expert in a specific field) can also help to improve the output of the model. This technique allows you to constrain its knowledge and focus its capabilities to better align with your needs. Essentially, role-play narrows the context and expertise of the model, leading to richer, more tailored content.
For example, if you require assistance with your employment process, you can ask the AI to act as a hiring manager and have it draw up a list of possible interview questions.
Conclusion
As AI continues to advance and play a more significant role in our lives, mastering the art of communicating with these technologies is key to fully maximizing their capabilities. Prompt engineering is a must-have skill for everyone irrespective of age, career or socio-cultural background. Enhancing our communication with these technologies not only ensures effective use of AI but also helps in shaping the future of human-machine collaboration.
